a focus on energy and wasteAbstract:  In this talk\, I will present an ove
rview of my research activities in the field of public utilities and netwo
rk industries\, providing electricity\, natural gas and municipal solid wa
ste services. All these sectors are regulated by an independent Authority.
For the electricity and natural gas sectors the path to the free market h
as almost been completed because in 2022 the protection regime will end. O
n the contrary\, the solid waste sector begun to be regulated from this ye
ar (2020)\, when the first national tariff method entered into force. Acco
rdingly\, as concerns the natural gas and electricity utilities\, my study
focuses on the analysis of economic performance and the competitiveness o
f the retail sector in a post-liberalization phase. Instead\, as concerns
the municipal waste sector\, my research focuses on the analysis of the co
st drivers of the service since the new tariff will have to be cost-reflec
tive. By employing an empirical model\, I consider both the predictors usu
ally adopted (e.g. the quantity of waste collected\, the wage level and th
e population density)\, and new variables able to describe the typical fea
tures of the Italian context that make the management of the waste service
more problematic: a low separate collection rate (especially in the south
ern regions)\, and the infiltration of crime in the waste disposal\, in th
e context of a general infrastructure insufficiency. Finally\, I will disc
uss the future development of this research. Short Bio: Francesca Di Pillo
